Hogmanay is Scotland’s New Year festival. It is a pagan celebration of the last day of the year traditionally ends with a huge bonfire (or poi-shows) and meeting of the New Year with party and gifts. According to tradition, it is very important who was the first in the New Year has come to your house if a guest brought the gifts (salt, coal, whiskey or cookies) – the year would be successful.
In the modern Edinburgh Hogmanay is celebrated with a special style: running in slips in the cold wind, fireworks, a torchlight procession, parades of bagpipers wrapped garlands, dancing and street parties and concerts.
